In the early to mid 20th century, New York experienced multiple waves of Puerto Rican and Latin American immigration. Many of these immigrants moved into East Harlem in an area that came to be known as El Barrio. Because of this. in 1969, El Museo Del Barrio was founded to celebrate and promote Latin American history and culture; the museum moved into its current location on 5th Avenue in 1977. The museum presents cultural events, such as dancing, and cultural exhibitions throughout the year.
