Entrepreneur Joseph Hirshhorn, a Latvian immigrant to the United States, collected numerous works of modern art by artists including Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock. Hirshhorn’s collection became the basis for the the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. A member of the Smithsonian Institute, the museum includes both an indoor gallery and outdoor sculpture garden as well. Since its founding in 1974, the collection has grown to include works by various contemporary artists alongside the original modern art pieces.
